Article about Bloomberg administration cutting senior centers

An article I wrote earlier this year has been published in my journalism school class’s website, The Red InkThe article: “Seniors Protest City’s Downsizing Services”:

A plan by the Bloomberg administration to close local senior centers drew the ire of officials and senior citizens on Tuesday, September 9.

The cuts would impact meal programs and seniors’ activities and force some centers to close, said the officials in a press conference at Queens Borough Hall.

The city showed its inability to reform the Department for the Aging when it lost at least 3,000 names consolidating data for its case management services earlier this year, said Democratic Councilman James Gennaro of Queens. The accusation was echoed by others throughout the press conference.

The Department under the Bloomberg administration has been out-of-touch with elderly citizens in formulating its proposals for reform, said the officials, who referred to the administration as “bean counters” and “bean cutters” several times during the event.

wow, Elaine ~ what a great article! paints a clear picture, with great touches (“’78-plus’” and others ;-) , and a powerful ending.

and what a sad situation. it’s great you’re giving voice to these people. as for the proposal being in keeping with changes sweeping the nation these past years, that’s reason to be against it, imho.

good for gennaro. thanks for sharing!

thanks! good point that the proposal’s similarity to others in the nation does not make it good–makes it worse!

thanks so much for your comments :-) :-)
